The stories other people write about you
The older I get, the more I realise how easy it is to become the person other people expect.
I’ve seen it in small moments. The surprise when someone discovers I travel with dogs. The raised eyebrow when they notice my tattoos. “I wouldn’t have thought…” they say.
They’re not necessarily judging me. They’re trying to reconcile what they’ve just noticed with the version of me they already had in mind.
It made me realise that other people’s stories become limiting only when we start protecting them ourselves.
The question
Whose version of you are you still trying to live up to?
